PopBar Privacy Policy
PopBar is made by Oluma Software. This policy explains what happens to your data when you use PopBar on your Mac.
In short: PopBar has no servers, no accounts, no analytics and no tracking. We never receive your text or any other data about you. Some features send text from your Mac directly to a service you choose; this page lists every one of them.
What stays on your Mac
- Selected text. PopBar needs the macOS Accessibility permission to notice the text you select and to send Copy, Cut and Paste to the app you are using. In the Mac App Store version, PopBar reads the selection by copying it (your clipboard is put back right after), and changes text through its own Services menu item, "PopBar: Replace Selection": the app you are using hands the selected text to PopBar and pastes the result back. PopBar does not record your typing or keep a history of what you select.
- Clipboard. Copy, Paste and Append use the system clipboard, as you would by hand.
- Settings and your own buttons are stored in PopBar's preferences on your Mac. The Mac App Store version also reads the keyboard shortcut you gave its Services item in System Settings, so it can press it for you; it reads nothing else there.
- API keys for AI providers are stored in your Mac's Keychain.
- On-device features never send text anywhere: Apple Intelligence (the default AI provider), Apple Translation, Speak, Define (the macOS Dictionary), Count, Calculate, color previews, text transforms and the scripts of your own Transform buttons.
- Open in an app. A button that opens text in an app (for example Pages or TextEdit) saves the text as a temporary file on your Mac and opens it in that app.
- Add to Calendar creates the event in your own calendar. PopBar asks for write-only calendar access: it can add events but cannot read your calendar.
What leaves your Mac, and only when you use it
| Feature | What is sent | Sent to |
|---|---|---|
| AI actions with a provider other than Apple Intelligence | The selected text and the instruction | The provider you set up in Settings → AI (for example OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Groq, OpenRouter, or your own Ollama, LM Studio or other server), under that provider's own privacy policy |
| Website buttons (Search Web, Translate, YouTube, Google Maps, your own website buttons) | The selected text, as part of the web address | That website, opened in your browser |
| Notes, Reminders, Mail, Messages | The selected text | The Apple app you picked: a share sheet (Notes, Reminders, Messages) or a new Mail message. Nothing is sent until you confirm or press Send there |
| Create with AI (when you make a new button) | The description you type for the button | DuckDuckGo, as a web search. When the button is for a website, PopBar also loads that website's pages to find and test its search. The description also goes to your AI provider |
| Currency conversion | Nothing about you or your text, only a request for today's exchange rates | frankfurter.dev (European Central Bank rates), at most every six hours |
These requests go straight from your Mac to the service. They never pass through any server of ours, and we cannot see them.
Children
PopBar does not knowingly collect data from anyone, including children.
