Common questions

The bar doesn't appear when I select text

PopBar needs one permission from macOS. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility and turn PopBar on. If it's already on, select it, press −, then add it again with +.

Also check that the app you're using isn't in Settings › Excluded Apps, and that Show on Selection is ticked in PopBar's menu bar menu. For text you select with the keyboard, press ⌃⌥P to show the bar.

Uppercase, Transform or Replace copied the text instead of changing it

The text was read-only (a web page, a PDF, a message you received), so PopBar copied the result for you to paste where you want it.

In the Mac App Store version, PopBar changes text through its own Services item, PopBar: Replace Selection. If it says it copied even in a text box you can type in, open System Settings › Keyboard › Keyboard Shortcuts… › Services › Text and make sure PopBar: Replace Selection is ticked and has a shortcut. Any shortcut works; PopBar reads the one you set. A four-key one such as ⌃⌥⌘P is the least likely to clash with other apps.

Cut or Paste says it can't work here

The selected text can't be edited, so there's nothing to cut or paste over. Cut copies the text instead.

How do I set up AI?

On a Mac with Apple Intelligence turned on, AI works right away, on your Mac, with no account. To use another provider, open Settings › AI, pick one (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter, Ollama, LM Studio or your own server) and paste your API key. Keys are stored in your Mac's Keychain.

Can I change which buttons appear?

Yes. In Settings › Actions you can turn buttons on and off, reorder them, change their icons and colors, and make your own with New AI Action… or Create with AI. Buttons that recognise your text, such as Add to Calendar for a date, move to the front of the bar when they match.

How do I see the tour again?

Click the PopBar icon in the menu bar and choose Take the Tour. PopBar Help in the same menu explains every setting.

How do I uninstall PopBar?

Quit PopBar from its menu bar icon, then drag PopBar from your Applications folder to the Trash. You can also remove it from System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility.
